Evaluation - Question 7 - Thriller Opening

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main task?

In my current group, we originally did different preliminary tasks so for this evaluation, we are going to do a video compiling both tasks as we talk about them.
As I did not say a great deal during the video, I'm going to say a little more here. I believe that my skills have come a long way since creating my preliminary task. In the time between making these 2 short films, I have had plenty of time to prepare and assist in our final thriller product. I have learnt how to use the camera equipment more efficiently so less mistakes were made, it also means the group worked better even though we had the little dispute, we got a better product created.

Evaluation - Question 3 - Thriller Opening

3) What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?

Many types of media institutions produce and distribute different types of media products. One example of a media institution that does this would be Time Warner Inc. Time Warner Inc is an American multinational company and entertainment conglomerate headquartered in New York City. It is currently the world's third largest entertainment company in terms of revenue, after Comcastand and The Walt Disney Company. It was also once the world's largest media conglomerate. Time Warner was first founded in 1990 with the merger of Time Inc and Warner Communications. The current company consists largely if the assets of the former Warner Communications (as well as HBC, a Time Inc subsidiary prior to the merger) and the assets of Turner Broadcasting (which was acuired by the company in 1996).

I believe we would use a multinational conglomerate media company such as Time Warner. I think it would be a good choice because it can get our film more noticed in other countries which means we will be able to obtain more income from the people watching as more people will see. The disadvantage to this however would be the fact that an American company would have partial control over the production. This means that we won't have as much choice in what happens. I still believe it would be the best choice as it gives us a bigger budget to get our film advertised.

Evaluation - Question 2 - Thriller Opening

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our thriller, we have chosen to represent teenagers as there is a certain stigma surrounding them. For example, most people assume all teenagers are loud, annoying and rebellious. With most teenagers, this is definitely the case. Teenagers also use swearing or taboo language when they're annoyed or frustrated at something. An example to support this would be when Mitchel swears after he drops his sausage roll.

Another point about our thriller would the fact that is an entirely male cast up to the last minute where Imogen is introduced as the ghost, however, in the shot it only shows her hand. So the film has primarily whiter male cast. Each of the characters are wearing average clothes that can be found in most shops which suggests there is nothing special about them. The charters are also just in the town center where people go everyday to shop or see friends. The colors in each of the shots are quite dull and plain which also suggest the characters are just average people. The characters also don't make any distinct actions throughout the opening. They're just walking through the town center to meet up.

We chose to represent this group to show that things can happen to anyone when they least expect it. Not just big tough people who can deal with all types of situations.

As I stated earlier, we are using the stereotype of how teenagers are perceived and how they are often unaware of there actions.

In terms of addressing specific audiences like teenagers it represents teen/young lifestyles by showing friends to be social and reckless. They went in to the antique center unknowing what might happen to them.

Evaluation - Question 1 - Thriller Opening

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our thriller is a mixture of supernatural and comedy. This challenges normal conventions as it is rare for thrillers to be funny as they are normally serious. This makes our thriller unique and different which would make more people watch it as it is unusual. It develops on typical media forms as it makes this form of thriller more well known.

The protagonist is often a brave male who seeks to restore order. In our thriller, the protagonists have no idea about what will happen to them they are normal teenagers. They aren't really seen as brave which challenges normal thriller conventions as the protagonist is normally brave and heroic.
The Antagonist will have a secret identity but will have met the protagonist at some point which has fuelled his need to go after the protagonist to begin with. Our thriller uses this as the antagonist is a ghost and they have no idea who it is or why it is trying to kill or posses them.

The audience should already expect the film to be scary in some way as soon as they walk in as it has a spooky atmosphere. The comedy factor will not be overused throughout the thriller as it will kill the horror part of it which is not good.

The Characters each have unique personalities  and personas. This may make the audience connect with the characters and feel more engrossed in the story. However this does support the way teenagers are percieved as many teenagers use informal and taboo language. Gor example, Mitchel swears after he drops his sausage roll.

I feel like we could have done some more research into how other supernatural/ comed horror thrillers are presented and made. It would have made our thriller more accurate and better presented.
Most thrillers are dark and often violent and often for higher age ranges. However, one of my favourite thrillers would be Batman - The Dark Knight.

This film is a really good representation of the thriller genre as it has an excellent protagonist (Batman) and an amazing antagonist (The Joker). This film supports the normal thriller genre as it has supporting chararcters to help Batman catch the Joker.
